Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures offered at the Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey. As such, our team receives a lot of questions about the particulars of the operation and what to expect. The topic of pain during and after surgery often comes up; many patients want to know, does lipo hurt?
In this month’s blog post, the team at Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey addresses this topic in more detail.
Is Surgery Painful?
The surgical experience should not be painful. Either general or local anesthesia is used to prevent any pain during surgery. (The type of anesthesia depends on the specific case.)
Our plastic surgeons typically use the tumescent liposuction technique, in which they infuse the treatment area with a special solution that includes lidocaine and epinephrine. While the lidocaine numbs the treated area, the epinephrine constricts the blood vessels to minimize blood loss and post-operative bruising. This adds an extra layer of pain management.
Is Recovery Painful?
Recovery may be uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be extremely painful. After the anesthesia wears off, some patients feel sore or tender. Some compare the post-operative sensation to the feeling they get the day after completing a tough workout. Others find it uncomfortable and choose to take oral medication as prescribed by the doctor. The discomfort generally dissipates with every passing day.
Other post-operative side effects include swelling and bruising. Wearing a compression garment and icing the treated area can help control these symptoms. Swelling can last for several weeks (or even months).
In a small number of cases, patients experience serious or persistent post-operative pain. This is very rare and usually indicates an unusual complication. If this happens, patients are urged to contact the doctor immediately for further directions.
Modern technology has afforded our team the ability to reduce unwanted body fat and sculpt the body without the need for surgery. Non-surgical body sculpting is an excellent choice for individuals that want to refine an area of the body, but are hesitant about undergoing surgery.
