What Breast Surgery Patients Should Know – But Don’t

At the Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey, our team believes in total transparency. We want our patients to feel as educated and informed as possible when making decisions about their care. Though the majority of our patients have done a lot of research on their desired breast procedure before coming to us, there are things that they don’t know and that we reveal during the consultation process. Here are some examples:

Not all breast surgeons are created equal.

Unfortunately, some doctors try to market themselves as breast surgeons but don’t have the credentials or experience. Breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction surgeons should meet the following criteria:

  • Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
  • Licensed to practice medicine
  • Many years of experience performing the procedure

Insurance may cover breast reduction surgery.

Some insurance companies offer coverage of breast reduction surgery when it is performed out of medical necessity — meaning that large, heavy breasts are causing physical pain on the back, shoulders or neck. However, not every procedure is automatically covered. Breast reduction candidates must check with their individual plan administrator for details.

Some implants may need to be replaced or removed further down the road.

Implants are strong and durable, but they may not last forever. About one in four breast augmentation patients need a second surgery after 10 years — because they develop a complication or they no longer like the look of their augmented breasts.

Nipple sensitivity might change.

There is a small chance breast surgery may cause a change in nipple sensation (though it is rare). Most often sensation is reduced or dulled, but in some cases, it is enhanced.

Bigger is not always better.

Some breast augmentation patients insist on enormous implants that don’t actually suit their body. They end up having implants removed because they went too big. Experienced plastic surgeons should recommend an appropriate size that takes into account the patient’s goals and body type.

Breast surgery can change your life.

Augmenting, lifting or reducing the breasts can help soothe lifelong insecurities — and in some cases, ease chronic pain and discomfort. Patients report better self-image, more self-confidence and improved quality of life after breast surgery.
