Saline implants are inserted and then filled with the saline solution once they are placed in the breast. This means that a smaller incision is required, as the outer shell is the only thing that needs to be placed into the breast from the incision point. This is opposed to silicone implants, which require a larger incision to fit the entire implant through.

A common fear among breast augmentation candidates is leakage. With silicone implants, many patients know of the “slow leak.” This occurs when there is a tear in the implant, causing the silicone to slowly leak out of the implant and into the body. This occurs so slowly that it often goes unnoticed, and can be potentially harmful to the patient’s body and health. Breast augmentation patients who opt for silicone may be advised to get an MRI every couple of years to check for these tears so that the implant can be replaced if necessary.

With saline implants, a leak will be immediately apparent, as the breast will appear noticeably different. The body can safely absorb saline, however, the implant will still need to be removed and replaced.

Saline implants do not need to be replaced unless they leak or break. Comparatively, silicone implants may need to be replaced every 10-20 years for safety. This will vary widely depending on the patient and their preferences as well as the surgeon’s recommendations, but it is still important to note.

This allows them to adjust the fill according to the patient’s preferences and what they believe will be the best size during the procedure.
