FAQ
The Mole Removal Q & A
The mole removal process is a relatively quick procedure, requiring the patient to come into the Plastic Surgery Group offices for just one treatment. During the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered in the area the mole is located in to ensure the patient is comfortable and does not feel any pain during the process. Next, the surgeon will carefully excise the mole with a sharp tool (stitches will be made if necessary). If the mole is removed for medical purposes (outlined below), it will be immediately sent to a lab for testing.
Moles are extremely common, however, they can sometimes be signs of skin cancer. If you have a mole that has any of the ABCDE rules, you should check with a medical professional to determine if it needs to be removed and tested for cancer. These rules are from the American Cancer Society:
- A is for Asymmetry: One half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other.
- B is for Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
- C is for Color: The color is not the same all over and may include different shades of brown or black, or sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
- D is for Diameter: The spot is larger than 6 millimeters across (about ¼ inch – the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can sometimes be smaller than this.
- E is for Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.
The Plastic Surgery Group can remove moles that may be cancerous and send them off for medical testing if necessary.
