According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures continue to outpace surgical procedures at a tremendous clip. ASPS reported 6.3 million Botox treatments in 2013 compared to just 133,000 facelift procedures.
What’s interesting about ASPS’ data is that the number of facelift procedures hasn’t changed significantly since 2000. However, the numbers for Botox have exploded. In 2000, only 786,911 treatments were delivered, which translates to a 700 percent increase between 2000 and 2013. (To be fair, Botox wasn’t FDA approved in 2000; it received safety clearance two years later.)
Pharmaceutical companies in the beauty industry have struck a chord with individuals who want to age gracefully. Every year, these companies release new minimally invasive products to meet the voracious demand of their consumers.
Let’s explore some of the reasons non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are becoming so popular:
Our patients are busy.
With jobs, kids, and social lives, our patients are busy. Although they desire a more youthful-looking face, many simply do not have the time to allocate to recovering from a facelift or neck lift procedure.
Products like Botox or dermal fillers are a much more convenient option. Injectable facial rejuvenation treatment can be administered during a quick in-office appointment. There is virtually no downtime after treatment, either.
Also, for many of our patients, time is of the essence! We understand that our patients want to see quick results, especially with a looming wedding or high school reunion. Botox and dermal fillers deliver quick results.
Some patients want to “test the waters.”
We see patients who want to address signs of facial aging but are hesitant to commit to surgery. Botox and filler treatment is a great compromise – they provide effective results that are only temporary. This strategy is great for people who want to try out the treatment, observe the results, and then make a decision about their regular anti-aging routine.
The options are endless.
As we mentioned, pharmaceutical companies continually develop new products and develop new technology within the anti-aging arena. At our practice, we enjoy offering our patients many options in their facial rejuvenation treatment — and our patients appreciate the choice. If, for example, a certain dermal filler doesn’t provide the desired results, there are others to choose from.
