Women with breast implants are socially and sexually more satisfied, and experience a higher quality of life, according to researchers.
This bold claim was part of a study published in an issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The research team used the BREAST-Q survey, which looked at changes in six areas affecting a woman’s quality of life:
- Satisfaction with breasts
- Satisfaction with overall surgical outcome
- Psychosocial well-being
- Sexual well-being
- Physical well-being
- Satisfaction with care
More than 600 women were surveyed before their breast augmentation surgery, again at six weeks after surgery, and yet again at six months afterward. Most of the women had silicone implants placed underneath the muscle.
The results found significant improvement in most areas assessed by the BREAST-Q survey. The women’s satisfaction with their breasts rose from 25 percent prior to surgery to nearly 80 after (using a 100-point scale). This improvement is significant and comparable to patients who undergo major orthopedic surgery such as total hip replacement.
A Dip in Physical Function Right after Surgery
The BREAST-Q scores did show that physical functioning was lower at six weeks after surgery compared to before surgery. However, this information is not startling. The authors of the study suggested that this could account for how long it took some women to completely recover from surgery. The study did not have enough follow-up data to show whether the women’s physical function eventually returned to their pre-operative level.
Older Women Report Lower Levels of Satisfaction
Older patients showed lower scores for satisfaction with their breasts and overall procedure:
- Average score of overall satisfaction for women under 30: 90
- Women in their 30s: 86
- Women in their 40s: 82
- Women ages 50 and older: 77
