Can Exercise Help Gynecomastia?

For men with gynecomastia, everyday life can present certain challenges. It can be embarrassing to go shirtless at the pool or beach. Dating can be difficult. And self-confidence in social situations can waver. The team at the Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey feels deep compassion toward any man that is self-conscious of their enlarged breasts, and we want to keep them informed of their treatment options.

A question that sometimes arises during a gynecomastia consultation is whether exercise can help treat the condition. We chose to address the answer to that question in a blog post.

Minimal Improvement (At Best)

Exercise can be helpful in any weight loss or weight management plan. However, many men with gynecomastia do not have a weight problem — some are actually very fit! Their enlarged breasts are composed of fatty adipose tissue, firmer glandular tissue or a combination of both. Exercise only reduces the fatty tissue; it cannot reduce the glandular tissue. Therefore, men with a lot of fat tissue in their chest area may see favorable results from regular exercise, but men with a lot of glandular tissue in their chest won’t achieve their desired outcomes through exercise alone.

That is not to say that, if you are a man with large breasts, you should not exercise. Working out makes the chest and the rest of the body look the best that it can. If you have been exercising regularly (and eating properly), but are still dismayed by your large breasts, there is a more effective treatment option for you.

Gynecomastia Surgery Is the Answer

Gynecomastia is best treated through surgical correction with male breast reduction. This surgery is a safe and effective way to achieve a flatter and firmer-looking chest. During the operation, the fatty tissue is removed using liposuction techniques; the firm glandular tissue is then excised from the chest. If needed, the nipple-areolar complex can be reduced in size and relocated to a higher position on the breast for a more attractive look. The result is a chest that looks more classically masculine. For men that have spent years worrying about excessively large breasts, gynecomastia surgery is life-changing.
